Interview of a dog owner

6. Aseem Rishi
Why did you adopt a dog? My aunt is special thus she never got married. She has a very major cat phobia so to keep cats away we got a dog. And there was good security for the house as well.

From where did you adopt a dog? Through family in pet shop business
Which breed of dog do you have? Cocker spaniel
What are the challenges in acquiring dogs? None faced
Did you take a certificate while getting it? No
What are the costs in buying a dog? 12,000
What are the costs in maintaining a dog? Not much, mainly food (pedigree), mix of cooked food and pedigree, toys, hair cut, shampoo (get it done professionally once a month.)
What are different essential activities you need to do to take care of a dog?
Have you ever had any diseases or medical problems from your dog? From my first dog- French poodle
Please give details. Got ticks from him.
Do you know of any one whose health has suffered because of a dog? No
How do you take care of your dog? What are the regular activities? Take him for walks twice a day, never got bored since he was entertaining and is a very close friend, run around with him, paint his face, scare my cousin as he was scared of dogs, give regular food.
What is the most difficult thing to make your dog do? Give him a bath.
How did train your dog? Any tips? Never got professional training, mostly has outside dogs in the lawns. So toilet training was not a problem. If they mess up you talk to them like you would scold a child. If too rebellious, hit slightly, not hard though.
Earlier dog was too aggressive and fought with humans and other dogs. Thus, it lead to his death since he fought with other dogs in the territory and got very injured and died in a few days.
I didn’t treat him well thus it lead to problems.

Learnings from another book

Dogs: 300 questions answered by Caroline Davis

Important equipment that people need while they are getting a dog:
1. Collar and Leash
2. Food and water bowls which have to be separate for dogs. They don’t enjoy sharing!
3. Bed: To save money it is advisable to buy a big one to accommodate your dog fully grown.
4. Bedding, Blankets: When dogs are just puppies they need this more like a child would.
5. Grooming tools: Brush, comb, shampoo
6. Toys that he can pounce, stalk, grab, shake, bite and kill
7. Food: Packaged or home made.
Feeding puppies:
Age Number of Meals
Weaning to 20 weeks 3 meals a day/milk at night
20 to 30 weeks 3 meals daily
30 weeks to 9 months 2 meals daily (if a very big dog then more)
Over 9 months 1 to 2 meals daily depending on the size of the dog.

Chewing bones is good to make the teeth and gum stronger. Although, it might be advisable to not give cooked bones to dogs as they are weak and might break and cause harm to your dogs.
Water: 1 to 2 litres of water needs to given to dogs on a daily basis. Tap water is fine, bottled water is not required.
Young pups require as much care and supervision as young children. Thus, if you don’t want your dog to turn aggressive then the initial groundwork is important.
1. The first is to give care and companionship to your dog. They must feel cared for else they won’t be people friendly and turn aggressive.
2. Make sure to toilet train them as children. This is to ensure that they happy potty manners.
3. Take them for walks and let them socialize with other dogs so that they don’t get aggressive.
4. Allot some specific space for them to rest/sleep. Everyone needs their personal space.
5. Bathe them and an early age itself so that they don’t run away from it as they grow older. For a pup a bath in 2-3 months is enough. The temperature has to be lukewarm.
From acquiring to arrival
Puppies should ideally stay with their mothers till 8 weeks else they are weak.
On arrival, the owner should take their puppy into the garden or an open space and let them relieve him. It is best to leave the dog alone that time. Praise him and pamper him when he does so.
Then allow him into the new house for leisure, it makes the puppy more receptive.
Pups like human babies sleep a lot; let them do so and constantly remind him of his space, bed, food and water bowls. This brings manners and he won’t try to eat off your plates.
At the time of teething pull away inappropriate items he is chewing. Get chew toys so that they don’t chew on objects he shouldn’t or destroy yours. You can add a bitter anti-bite liquid since it helps to cure the habit.

Why should people adopt dogs more than sending them to shelters

An article that I found which tells answers why people should adopt dogs. It is true that there are shelters and they help out dogs as much as possible but everyone can contribute by adopting at least one dog.

Link and aricle are below

http://www.clickindia.com/detail.php?id=7175686

Most of us assume that Shelters are the best alternatives when we find an abandoned or injured dog or even a motherless puppy. This is not true, especially in India, where in most shelters the dogs are crammed into small cages and made to live like that for the remainder of its life ,if it hasn't contracted a disease like distemper, rabies etc first.

For puppies it's even worse as their immunity is very low and they are prone to easily picking up infection or due to environmental factors like excessive heat, humidity etc they are unable to last more than a few days in a shelter.

Your best bet when rescuing a dog is to be prepared to either keep it yourself, have a friend adopt it or even send it to a farm house as compared to a shelter.

Alternatively, you can also send details of the dog to me via email with photographs and we can try and find it a good home.

This book will change your dogs life

I looked at this book to study look and feel. It is quite interesting and different from what the dog portals look like.

The colours used are very loud, fresh and vibrant. The illustrations used are youthful and modern. There is a lot of use of different colours. The grid is mostly one column with two sections. Thus, this book seems to be targeting to existing dog owners to make their dog keeping fun. It also seems to be more youth oriented with the content and look and feel.

The content of the book is more to do with the fun and activities related to dogs and not the serious information. It is divided with activities to be done on a daily basis over a year thus there are 365 sections. It starts with chinese zodiac and the appropriate dog as per your luck to the 7 birthdays of your dog in a year with activities to be done everyday.

It is not a very good book for information but a well designed book

Other websites

WSD is a shelter in Mumbai so they have a website for their own activites, adoption etc.

India Kennel
is a website about a personal named Rajesh who is very passionate about breeds and has put up dogs for sale and information and care of various breeds. The navigation is simple; one column grid with buttons on the left side with soft colors and pictures of puppies with humans. It is more of relationship of breeds with their master.

Dog Spot
is a website where people can make their own accounts and put up dogs for adoption and share news, blogs etc. There are some tips on puppy care and training but it is too much information places in a confusing way thus the navigation is confusing. There are photographs used and a simple blue header with a two column grid.

dogadoption.in

This is a website based in India which is a portal for stray dogs only. They have not mentioned any city they particularly function from but they have a section specially for Mumbai

Look and Feel: The look and feel is simple, looks like a blog layout with one header picture of puppies and a green background which gives a soft and tender feel. The navigation is simple and clear placed below the header picture and the other are placed vertically on the side of the information. It is a very action oriented info-website.

Content: The website only covers adoption of Indian stray dogs and their care. The person who started this website called Malleka is an animal lover and got attached to stray dogs when she adopted one who was left behind as all his siblings drowned in the accident. She felt it made her more human to have a friend like that thus wanted to help other pups too. She has information on adoption, after adoption care and some knowledge about training. There are a few dogs available for adoption and news that is updated every few days. She has answers to basic training and vaccination questions in a more personal manner.

Some things missing are how people can give her information about dogs for adoption in various areas. It seems it is more personal and she only helps dogs that she personally finds which is a gap in this webiste

Who shouldn't keep dogs

1. People who won't be able to cover the basic expenses and needs of a dog: If some people really cannot cover costs, they can either adopt a dog from a shelter where vaccinations are done free of cost( if they are passionate and know about dog care) or consider keeping one where they don't have to make major compromises for themselves or for the dog.

2. People who travel or shift homes often: Dogs don't like to move much. For people who travel too much; if they have a trustworthy person at home who will ensuring proper care of the dog with meals given on time etc. only then they should adopt a dog else they should not.

3. People have a strong disliking towards them: If pressure from children or any other kind is the only reason then people should wait and try to be more receptive towards the idea of a dog as a family member who they can love like any other then they should consider keeping a dog else they shouldn't or wait till they are receptive.

Questions answered: Who adopts/should adopt the dog

Interview Summary 1: Who will adopt dogs

People who don't have dogs at home:

I interviewed different people in the family to see who influences the decision and who has to follow it. In a family there is a father, a mother and children and sometimes even grandparents.

Thus, I interviewed few fathers, few mothers and also children. Also, during each interview I asked them about their family members.

I discovered that most fathers either do not care or don't like dogs for they find them dirty and full of germs.

Mothers are scared that the entire burden of care will come onto them even though being women they have a soft corner and want to do something for their welfare.

Most children want to keep dogs but due to prejudices or family problems they are not allowed to. Some people, the whole family absolutely hates dogs and have their strong disliking is difficult to tackle thus, I would want to target the women as they have take care of the dogs either through their children or directly.

Through my literature review I have found that most of common worries that people have can be easily tackled with proper training and vaccination in the first few months. For instance, People have worries about excessive barking or biting or diseases or toilet training which is not very difficult if work is divided for the first few months. After that the dogs can be given regular food at home baring a few and walks. Other than that the dog only give love and care to their master. Also, some people have assumptions about infections spread from dogs which aren't correct so that can be tackled to. People who say we don't like animals or don't care about them will not be looked it by me at this stage.

Interview questions for breeders:

Review 2: Revised Proposal

Topic or Focus and working title
How can people adopt and take care of their dogs in Delhi

(A way to guide people to acquire pets and make their pet keeping easy and fun)
A contextual study of the situation

Justification (Why this topic or focus? What is the purpose of your research for you and for a wider audience? Why is it useful?)

Relationship to theory
Man and dog co-existed as friends ever since the pre-historic times. Wolves who are ancestral dogs were befriended by humans for security and company and in return they got love and food from their master.
In gradual years humans and wolves both evolved and the setting for both became more urban. Dogs started living in concrete houses along with humans.
Man became more advanced and stopped caring that much about dogs as pets. Also, with excessive branding even dogs are judged as brands as per their breeds. Also, there are a lot of stray and abandoned dogs on the roads in Delhi. Even after people adopt dogs they sometimes are unaware as to how to take care of them and thus they become a problem more than a friend.

Relevance to the external environment/ Need

Most people are aware of existence of dogs around them either in their houses, houses around them or the streets. They also have a liking or disliking towards them or they are not aware of the importance of a dog in their house.
A dog could offer a great companion, a true friend, help in socializing, bring you status, keeps you busy and also helps in the security of your home as they are considered loyal to their masters and would never betray them.
However, there are certain problems starting from personal issues that people have such as lack of time, space or money to adopt a dog and thus they wouldn’t. Also, there are people with misconceptions about the diseases that dogs can spread. Some would want to adopt/acquire dogs but they may not know which one, where to go, how high is the maintenance of each dog , where to get it treated etc.
If some of the problems that people have towards dogs could be resolved; some more fortunate can find a family and love. Also, after acquiring their dogs they could get answers to common problems that owners have which will make their job easy and the dog happier.
My project is aimed at making people more receptive towards dog as a pet at home and looking at the benefits more than getting stuck with their apprehensions.

Relevance to your practice

Since I am a communication design student, I would like to study the area of dog adoption and care in my research project and then maybe apply it to design to create awareness about adoption or care of dogs as a possible solution or provide solutions to common problems that people face with dogs like finding existing services for dogs such as training.

From acquiring to arrival

Dogs: 300 questions answered by Caroline Davis

I read half of this book today and it gave me a lot of information. The summary of my learnings is in this post and the ones following it.

Water: 1 to 2 litres of water needs to given to dogs on a daily basis. Tap water is fine, bottled water is not required.

How to have a happy dog- Andre McHugh

This is a book which starts with a basic which dog to buy to how to take care of your dog so it turns out happy instead of aggressive and mismanaged. If taken proper care, a dog can offer to be the best friend you’ll ever have and take care of you.
Starting with the basic survival needs to what keeps a dog happy such as training, socializing, companionship etc. To the food they must be given and not given at home or packaged to their exercise (how much; how to make it exciting; when to exercise) to stimulation and training and also what diseases they can carry.
It is a package of how to understand dogs and how they can bring 10 times the amount of happiness that you’re providing them.

Work done today

Visted 3 more pet shops called winsdor and bittoo in Khan Market and observed the products, customers and pet shop owners.

Interview the co-founder of Fredicoes, a dog shelter. His name is Gautam.
Saw a lot of dogs getting shelter there and roaming around very happily. There were a lot of volunteers and vets around to take care of them.
He gave me details of what work he does and how quite openly and gave a brochure of their activities.

Few found books

What products do you keep? Dog food, cat food, fish food. Dog food includes royal canin and pedigree. Royal Canin is what is usually bought though pedigree is an Indian brand.dog shampoos, powder, vitamins, calcium, choostix with various flavours from Lal pets and Taneja, collars, chains, food bowls, beds and dog toys.
Dogs are treated like babies and thus they need all this too.
What is the importance of packaged dog food? Ideally, dog food should be given to dog for the first 10 months since they might lack nutrients otherwise. After that normal house food should be given.
How is the procedure of selling dogs? We always register and tell them basic ways to take care of dogs.

Do you follow up with people who you sell dogs to? They come if they have a problem but there is no proper system and we don’t check on the dogs once they’re sold.

Why do people need pets?

Why do people need pets?

This is a very important question. The demand for pets determines the supply. Many people can see the use of keeping cattle: they serve as food for people. But what use are pets? The most common reasons for keeping pets are:
• company
• socializing
• they are beautiful, nice and interesting
• status
• something to do

Company
Many people have pets to substitute relationships with partners, children or family members. Many elderly people for instance, like having a dog instead of being all alone at home. This is usually a lap dog, very affectionate and strokable.

The animal serves people's need to cherish, love and fight boredom.

Status
Pets give status. When an animal looks dangerous, for instance, this reflects on its owner. Many people (sub) consciously pick animals that best suit them and most reflect their status.

Something to do
Preventing boredom is another important reason to keep pets. An animal needs attention. It can need a lot of attention, as dogs do, but there are also animals that don't need as much attention, such as fish or turtles. Besides, you can look at them. Animal-watching is a nice way to spend your time, just like people-watching.

Socializing
Pets make socializing with others easier. People are more inclined to start a conversation when they can focus their attention on the animal in a moment of silence. Just like with any other hobby, it's nice to talk to people that have the same hobby.

Research Proposal

My Proposal topic is:

How to create awareness about pet adoption and care in Delhi.

Some questions I would like to research the following questions under this:
1. How to create this awareness?
2. What are the existing modes are used to create such awareness.
3. What are the existing strategies used to create such awareness.
4. What kind of content will be useful for my target audience? (Stories, information on acquiring pets and taking care of them, which dog to buy, how to take care of them etc.)
5. How can I study the look and feel for the same?

Appropriate tools:
1. Interviews of veterinarians, dog shelter heads.
2. Questionnaires to approach dog lovers and owners which and will be based on R
3. Literature review (News about dogs, shows, pet related stories and films)
4. Identifying the target audience: urban, young, have a basic income to be able to
take care of dogs, dog lovers and owners.
